The Iberians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and Muslims have all left a dramatic influence over the centuries.  The name of Altea is believed to take its origins from the Greek – Altahia “I Cure”, then the Arabs who called it Althaya “health to all” hence the River Algar translates as “the river of health”.

Altea has 4 miles of pebbled beaches, which run parallel to the palmed seafront esplanade with plenty of international bars and restaurants.  This is a hub of activity on an evening watching the sunset over the Mediterranean as the waves ripple.  The sophisticated European atmosphere is vibrant as they enjoy a leisurely stroll to compliment the night.  Daytime activities are extensive for those who enjoy physical participation!  There are 3 yachting marinas and 2 sailing clubs – hence the nautical pursuits are very diverse from diving, rowing, sailing, water skiing, surfing schools, boat hire and lots of water sport facilities.  Other land activities include tennis clubs, an Olympic swimming pool, 2 football pitches, a covered sports pavilion, 9-hole golf course, cycling and horse riding …..to name but a few.

Gabriel Miro, the famous Spanish author and poet called Altea the “sun roasted town” because of its location and brightness.  It has always attracted artists, painter, sculptors, writers and musicians of many nationalities, who have made it a Bohemian paradise.

The University of Culture and Fin Arts adjoins the town and its theatre of performing arts has distinguished ensembles regularly.  The Villa Gadea is a small palace and international music centre that coordinates 7 leading world music organisations. The Palau Altea with its conferences and exhibitions is a meeting point for artists and spectators, covering theatre, dance, opera, world music, painting, sculpture and photography.  There is also the Navarro Ramon Art Gallery, the Eberhard Schlotter Foundation and the Marcabel Foundation for interesting artistic visits.
