For its strategic situation it has been coveted by many different civilisations.  Iberians, Romans, and Visigoths preceded the civilisation which was to make the city the cultural centre of the Western world for centuries: the Muslims, They bequeathed the city most of its exceptional heritage and designed its urban layout, a charming tangle of narrow lanes, beautiful gardens and refreshing fountains.

Alongside Moorish Granada stand the Renaissance and Christian Granada which was chosen by the Catholic Monarchs as their last abode.  The city, with the magic of the Sacromonte quarters, the grand palaces of The Alhambra, and the quiet carmines, has inspired many illustrious poets and artists.  Perhaps the memory of its evocative charms was what made King Boabdil – the last Moorish king – shed a few tears when he had to abandon his beloved city.

That Granada is a meeting point for lovers of art is reflected in its comprehensive programme of cultural activities.  Events which should not be missed include: the International Music and Dance Festival – which is held in some of the most beautiful venues in the city – the Tango and Jazz Festivals, the Flamenco Festival of Huetor Vega, and the Young Filmmakers Festival.  The city has a number of museums which are housed inn highly unusual building and cover an unbeatable range of subjects.  Archaeology and art are the central themes in the Alhambra (B-6), Fine Art Archaeological museums.  Religious iconography and art fill the San Juan de Dios Museum, whilst the most innovative trends in painting can be seen at the Jose Guerrero Art Centre.  Also well worth visiting are the Garcia Lorca House Museum in the Huerta de San Vicente, and the Science Park.
