Spanish Villa Guide to Guadalest in the Costa Blanca region of Spain

Guadalest – The Eagles Nest - named because of its position by the Arabs in the 8th century, means the Eagles Nest.  Perched on a rocky outcrop over 610 m high and surrounded by the Aitana, Aerella and Xorta mountains, it is the most visited village on the Costa Blanca.

Guadalest is divided into two parts; The ‘Castel’ quarter, the original village fortress can only be accessed through the St, Jose gate, carved out of the rock face.  Standing at its peak, with it white bell tower overlooking the village, you have breathtaking view of the surrounding hills sloping away into the valleys, making this the perfect spot for a memorable holiday photo.

The ‘Arrabal’ quarter, just below the fortress wall was where the expelled Arabs built their homes.

The village has a population of 200 people and is overflowing with history and culture.  There are many quaint craft shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs along the cobbled streets and you can also purchase some exquisite delicacies of the region, including the ever popular delicious pots of honey.

Inside Guadalest you can visit the many unusual museums which are dotted around this ting village – one of which for example is the unique display of the miniature dolls houses carefully constructed over 19 years.

For those with walking difficulties, or if you wish to just sit back and relax, there are a selection of local restaurants and cafes, allowing you to enjoy a chilled drink or a hot Lamumba (brandy and chocolate) whiles admiring the beauty of this quaint village.

Just below the town is the giant reservoir of Guadalest, which supplies water to the coastal towns including Benidorm.  Nearby you will find the famous Algar waterfalls an authentic natural park with clear chilled mountain water pools, ideal for paddling or bathing in the summer months.  Taking in the tranquil picturesque surround of Guadalest you will find it very difficult to believe that you are only 42 minutes outside of the bustling resort of Benidorm.
