Villajoyosa – the Costa’s Shining Jewel is a fishing town situated about five kilometres south of Benidorm.  Its name literally means the jewelled town and it is an interesting place to visit, as much for its 3.5kilometers of beaches as for its walled old town with historic buildings.

With a population of around 26,000 people, it also receives thousands of tourists every summer, particularly in the month of July, which is when the town celebrates it famous Moors and Christians festivities.

The main industry is fishing and there is a large fishing harbour with auction rooms where the daily catches are sold to the highest bidders.  During a visit there, one will often spot families of fishermen sitting on the ground mending the nets ready for the following day’s work.  There is also a yachting marina where on can wander round to admire the more luxurious vessels.

The old town is also worth a visit, protested by its walled perimeter.  Winding cobbled streets off a peaceful haven from the hustle and bustle of the more modern shopping centre and may of the buildings date back to the beginning of the 19th century.
